Ideas for Review/Critique (Use as many as you wish)
1. Brief statement on style as a help or hindrance to understanding – give an example.
2. Where does the article fit into the class? Agrees with or disagrees with – give examples.
3. Pick one confusing concept or paragraph or idea and explain why it is confusing.
4. Pick one concise idea, concept, paragraph and explain why it is so.
5. What would the common citizen take away from this article?
6. Who was the article written for?
7. What did you personally get from this article? First person OK.
Mini-Report (Article Review/Critique) Outline
General

– Pick one of the articles selected by the Instructor for the Mini-Report.

– Read the article and makes notes.

– There are two parts to the Mini-Report; the review and the critique.

Review

The review section of the Mini-Report should be only three pages long. It should contain the following in your own words:

– The author’s thesis statement somewhere in your intro paragraph.

– Several paragraphs each dealing with a major section of the author’s development of the explanation of the thesis statement.

– These paragraphs should take you up to the middle of the third page.

– The last paragraph on the third page should contain your own words explaining the author’s conclusion.

– Avoid long quotes.

– If quotes are used, use “ ” and put ONLY the page number where the quote is located in brackets after the last “…… e.g. “(p. 9)

– References to the article are assumed to come from the article being reviewed and do not need to be referenced. Only reference direct quotes and be very sparing of the number of these you use.

– Avoid references to other articles and books.

– The first three pages are review only and should not contain any of your opinions of the article.

Critique

The critique section of the Mini-Report should be only one and a half pages long. It should contain in your own words:

– Three half-page paragraphs each dealing with one specific critique

– Critiques can be positive or negative.

– Each should explain in your own words why a certain part of the article is good, bad or indifferent.

Your Conclusion

Your conclusion should be only one half page long. It should explain in your own words:

– A general statement about what the article was about.

– A statement explaining your overall evaluation of the article.

– A statement showing how the article fits in with what we are studying in class.

– A statement explaining what group the article is best suited for.

– A final statement ending the Mini-Report.

Format

– Avoid colloquial expressions and slang.

– Do not use contractions.

– Proper spelling is expected.

– Proof read for wrong word usage. e.g. “there” used for “their”.

– Double space.

– One inch margins all around.

– Number the pages, except for the Title Page (see example of the Title Page included at the end of this document).

– No Reference Sited or Bibliography section is needed.
