Project description
Produce an original piece of writing in any genre. This could be any kind of writing which interests you but should NOT be an academic essay such as you might produce for another of your Middlesex modules. Examples might include: a newspaper or magazine article (editorial, interview, feature, news report, etc.); a blog post; website, marketing or advertising copy; prose fiction; poetry; song lyrics; a radio, TV, film or theatre script. It is fine to submit an extract from a longer piece (whether finished or not) but you should indicate the status of your writing clearly. Discuss with your tutor if you are unsure about what to write. This piece should be double-spaced and no more than 1000 words (fewer is fine).

2. With reference to your writing give an example of each of the following terms (in some cases, these may be terms we have not yet discussed in class so this may involve some research on your part):

a. auxiliary verb

b. semantic field

c. lexical cohesion

d. coordination

Note: you should refer to at least one source in each of these answers and make clear exactly how you are using it.

3. In no more than 1000 words (again, fewer is fine), describe and justify the style of writing you have produced in part 1, making clear:

a. the genre to which you believe your piece belongs (any reasonable way of characterising the genre is fine, but it is usually helpful to be fairly precise, e.g. something like ‘a short story’ or ‘a blog entry’ would be very broad so it’s better to say something about what kind of novel or what kind of blog you have in mind)

b. the intended audience (remember to be as precise as you can about this)

c. the main aim(s) you have tried to achieve in writing this piece (note: these should be about aims to do with how you have used language and not simply about the content or what your writing is about, e.g. you might say that you have chosen to write in a particular style in order to achieve particular kinds of effects)

d. an account of TWO specific linguistic decisions you have made in writing your piece and what effects you hoped to achieve by choosing these particular formulations

e. any further comments or thoughts you think are relevant (it’s acceptable to have no further comments but this gives you the chance to tell us anything else which you think might help us to understand your aims and how you have tried to achieve them)
