Application Research

1. Given the Hypothesis: Exercise is related to levels of stress, answer the following questions:
1) State a prediction based on the above Hypothesis.
2) Which method (experimental or nonexperimental) would you use to test this hypothesis? Why?
3).Which is the independent or “cause” variable and which is the dependent or “effect” variable?
4) State an operational definition for each variable. If experimental, describe how the independent variable might be manipulated and the dependent variable measured. If nonexperimental, describe how both variables might be measured.
2. For an Experimental Design at below, please answer the following questions:
Participants participated in a driving simulation study to investigate night-driving reactions as a function of alcohol consumption and road conditions. Participants drank “cocktails” containing either no alcohol, 3 ounces of alcohol, or 6 ounces of alcohol. After 30 minutes, they began the driving simulation test. Each participant simulated a drive on a straight road, a road with gentle curves, or a road with many sharp curves and on which the participants encountered various road hazards. Driving speed and the number of accidents were measured.
1) Identify the design (e.g., 2 X 2 factorial).
2) Identify the total number of conditions.
3) Identify the manipulated variable(s).
4) Is this an IV X PV design? If so, identify the participant variable(s).
5) Is this a repeated measures design? If so, identify the repeated variable(s).
6) Identify the dependent variable(s).
3. Outcomes of Factorial Designs
B1 B2 B3
A1 5 6 7
A2 6 7 10
1) Is there a main effect of IV A?
Yes___No______
Overall means of A1 _____ A2 _____
2) Is there a main effect of IV B?
Yes___No______
Overall means of B1 _____ B2 _____ B3 _____
3) Is there an A X B interaction?
4) Graph the results.
4. Some questions are more readily answered using quantitative techniques, and others are best addressed through qualitative techniques or a combination of both approaches. Suppose you are interested in how a parent?s educational background affects the life of an adolescent.
1) What are Independent variables? What are Dependent variables?
2) Provide operational definitions for each Independent and Dependent variable.
3) Develop a research question best answered using quantitative techniques and another research question better suited to qualitative techniques
