Architecture, Building and Planning

Imagine you are one of the architects (Le Corbusier, Antonio Gaudi, Frank Lloyd Wright, Thomas Jefferson, Louis I. Kahn) that we have studied this semester. On your way home from the job you run into a potential client. While quickly explaining what your firm concentrates on and why they should hire you, you grab a piece of paper (napkin, etc.) out of your bag and sketch your proposal.
When you get home you draft a letter to this client further explaining the architectural philosophy that guides your project. You also include several images and sketches for the client of your most significant work as well as more sketches of the proposal.
——————————————
For this assignment, select your favorite architect—anyone we have discussed this semester—and write this letter assuming the their voice, and include your sketch or sketches. Articulate a philosophy that guides their practice as we know it today. Accordingly, this document should be succinctly and persuasively written, and informed by your own research into your chosen architect’s life and work. Questions that might guide your research include:
What was the architectural climate within which your architect practiced?
What was the architect’s personal and educational background?
What design values and ideas did the architect hold most dear?
How were those values expressed in his/her architecture? What design values or practices did the architect
champion?
Although this letter should read as a coherent statement, it will likely include:
1. A brief introduction and background that outlines the main problems your architect wants to address or solve for
the client.
2. A discussion that articulates why you believe what you believe. Outline your reasoning in a direct, even
confrontational manner. Do not be afraid to attack other architectural movements/schools of thought—this
section should be both an honest and provocative statement of the architect’s thought process.
3. Adeclarationofintentinwhichyouarticulatehowdesignerscanaddresstheproblemsasstated.Whatapproach
does the architect advocate?
4. Attach a bibliography of at least 4-5references that lists all works you consulted
This assignment is about about 2 -3 pages, double spaced (prior to including images). It should be informed by historical research and include images, make sure that you do not copy another person’s words as your own.
