Basic Argumentative Paper Topic/Prompt: We often hear people make statements like, “Taste is
subjective,” meaning what you like is an issue of personal aesthetics, which can’t be right or
wrong. For your first essay though, I’d like you to argue the merits of something or someone
from pop culture that you enjoy greatly. For example, it could be a song, a photograph, a
fictional character, a film, a painting, an artist, a genre, a film,“ a public figure (actor, politician,
comedian, etc.), and so on.
You’ll need to supply three reasons why and three ouztsidesourggs to bapkflupthem up.
Additionally, you’ll need to write a counter-argument to look at one of the common reasons as to
why detractors don’t usually like this i“texr.t”{oir person you like. Make sure to have a source to
back up this negative belief as well.

Like any academic paper, your essay should also have unity-all topic sentences and supporting
details should relate directly to your thesis statement-and cohesion-you need to use the
transitional language to make your ideas flow together logically. You also have the Option of
using the Point-By-Point or Block methods as outlined in class.
Format
As with everything else we’ll be doing in this class, your final draft should be formatted
according to the following specifications:
1. Everything should be Times New Roman (12 point)
2. MLA-style heading in the upper left-hand corner (double-spaced and 12 pt font)
3. Title centered just below the information in the left corner (also 12 pt font-no quotation
marks, bold, italics, or underline)
4. Name, class info, and title should take up no more than a quarter (25%) of the first page
5. This essay should be no more or less than three double-spaced pages.
6. All paragraphs need to be indented.
7. You will need to use outside sources, and you will need to cite everything appropriately in the
body of the essay and in the \Vorks Cited page, which is the last page of your project. If you
have any questions about how to do this, let the instructor know.
