In this second module, we advance to the 17th Century and discover the ways in which art in the Baroque Era was influenced by and reflected major European cultural changes and dynamics at that time. Examining art in the context of history and culture helps us more fully appreciate the socio-political nature of art and the reasons for changes in artistic style over time. Major shifts such as those that occurred between the Renaissance and Baroque eras usually are not merely due to changes of fashion or taste, but represent shifts in values, struggles for cultural power and dominance – for example between the Catholic Church and Protestantism, or between the Church and various monarchies during the period.
Why did these major shifts happen? What are some of the key differences between the Renaissance and Baroque styles, and how can we tell them apart? What socio-cultural dynamics influenced the emergence of the Baroque style? How are different artists from different regions representing the realities of their time? These are some of the questions that we will explore in this module.
