The senior management of a relatively small but rapidly growing airport (fictitious) have become aware that many airports are pursuing ‘sustainability’ policies – along the lines of maximising the social and economic benefits of their business while minimising the adverse social and environmental impacts. The senior management have asked you to produce a short executive summary report for them that explains the key aspects of sustainability as applied to an airport operator business.
The report should be as broad as necessary to describe sustainability approaches at airports but written succinctly for a senior management audience.
For this assignment you are required to produce an executive summary report (illustrated with graphs and tables) for a senior manager from an airport operator business that:
• Explains the concept of sustainability as it is applied to airports by airport operator businesses;
• Explores the approaches taken by airports in the context of the wider literature on sustainability in business and sustainable development;
• Recognises and critically examines the sustainability policy approaches taken at airports.
The assessment criteria against which your work will be marked are as follows:
• fulfilment of the requirements of the assignment task (including adherence to the word count and an executive summary report format);
• appropriate use of tables and graphs to illustrate and enhance the discussion in the text;
• evidence of reading around the subject with correct and complete citation and referencing of sources;
• an authoritative description of sustainability as the term is currently being applied at airports in the UK and elsewhere;
• a critical appraisal of current airport sustainability policies, including reference to broader sustainability theories and definitions;
• delivery of a clear, well-structured essay with a good standard and style of written English, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Your work should be word processed and printed for submission. Your report should be no more than 500 words in length. You may use tables and graphs in the usual way, which are excluded from the word count, but any apparent deliberate attempt to circumvent the word count will be penalised. The word count excludes the reference list, within text citations, and figure and table captions and text. The Harvard Referencing protocol should be used.
