It is important for health care professionals to understand different
epidemiological study designs and their associated strengths and
weaknesses. The task for Assessment 2 is to undertake a critical
evaluation of 3 major study designs (Cross sectional, Case-control and
Cohort) with reference to sources of error and bias.
The purpose of this assignment is to:
• Promote understanding of the unit materials;
• Develop critical appraisal skills;
• Develop written communication skills: university level academic essay
• Develop written communication skills: the use of correctly cited in-text
and end-text references using APA referencing conventions. Method:
• Review unit materials, up to and including Module 8.
• Critically evaluate the 3 study designs with reference to sources of error
and bias.
• Construct an academic essay.
• Students are expected to write in their own words (see information on
‘Academic Writing and Plagiarism’ below).
• Utilise APA 6th in-text and end text referencing technique. Resources:
• Unit material: including module notes, tutorial tasks and unit textbooks.
• Other resources required: minimal or nil. Tip: Use the Marking Key to
guide your paper. It is a critical review, not a literature review. This
means that you are criticising the different study designs, you need to
identify the strengths and weaknesses of the epidemiological study
designs. Use APA referencing style. Marks will be deducted for incorrect or
omitted referencing. Penalties apply for late submission.
