Assignment Briefing

?Your question is as follows:
Analyse feedback strategies that you have observed and reflect upon the extent to which they had an impact on pupil learning, particularly when addressing misconceptions.

You should write approximately 1500 words and include a separate bibliography.

The aim of this assignment is to build upon the understanding of assessment processes. Reflect upon the effectiveness of two strategies that you had observed in practice and how they may assist in progressing learning, particularly when a pupil/s is/are experiencing difficulties.

The key concepts to consider within the scope of this assignment are ‘impact’ and ‘feedback’. In addition, consider assessment and recording: how assessments may be undertaken; how recording assessment results may be implemented and the overall purpose of assessment within the ‘plan, do, review’ cycle.

‘Impact’ is currently a favoured term used by OFSTED during their inspections, for example, when observing a lesson they will determine what (if any!) ‘impact’ the teaching has had upon pupils’ achievements.

Ask yourself, how do I know that all the pupils have achieved their objective? Or, how do I know some (or all!) pupils did not? Of the latter group, reflect upon why this was the case and contextualise your thoughts. What were the difficulties or misconceptions presented? How did the teacher respond? What was the outcome? What would you have done?

Feedback during learning gives pupils important information in regard to where they are now in relation to where they want to be and to prompt further learning. It can take many forms: written, verbal, peer generated, self-generated, via questioning or summative statement to name a few!
A central part of your discussion will be to determine what constitutes ‘effective feedback’ ie that which helped to progress learning in particular situations. So, in order to critically reflect I hope you will, as ever, read around the subject thoroughly so that you are able to take an analytical stance in terms of the theory/practice links.
Finally in order to ‘pre-empt’ possible questions:
? You may focus on one lesson or a series, the main point being that your assignment
reflects upon the effect the feedback methods used had on learning and whether
progress was observed.
? You may focus on the progress of one child or a group.
? Please do not fall into the trap of simply describing different feedback methods will
you?
? Finally don’t forget to use Harvard and a third person narrative
