Task:
This task is to be undertaken by referring to a country of your choice, excluding Australia
and the country the individual student is from.
The numerical data you use can be accessed in the “Countries” section of the Australian
Government, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) website. Google DFAT to
access this site. You will be able to access the information required by referring to the
country Fact Sheet and the Country Brief sections of the DFAT sites for the data.
Purpose:
• To introduce students countries relevant to the teaching of this subject
• To learn about the trading interaction between countries to help students appreciate
the extent of globalisation and implications for management in international
organisations
• To gain access to current information about these countries
• To gain knowledge of some of these countries natural and man-made endowments
which can enlighten current trading and development relationships
• To learn to analyse complex inter-related data in order to form predictive opinions of
short and longer term business changes and growth at this point in time
There are 4 sections to this task: Geography, Culture, Politics and Economics
Part 1: Geographic
Part 2: Culture including Religion
Part 3: Politics and Legal systems:
Part 4: Economics and Business Development
Each part will be marked as shown for an assessment total value of 40 marks and the whole
assignment is worth 10% of the overall subject assessment of 100%
Geography: (5 marks)
Set up a table showing
The land area, the population, and the area of land per head of population (total land area
divided by population) using Fact sheet data.
Culture(s) and Religion(s): (10 marks)
Using Briefing Notes from the DFAT website and data from or other sources, write a brief
statement on the specific cultural practices, customs, artistic practices, cuisines, education
and languages of each of the chosen country.
Political and Legal Systems: (10 marks)
Using DFAT data and data from other sources briefly describe the type of Political and Legal
Systems that exist in the chosen country.
You should provide information on the right to vote, the frequency of elections, the political
structure (Democracy, Republic. Communist etc), and the relationship between the
Legislature and the Judiciary.
Business: (15marks)
Using the Fact Sheets of the chosen country provide the following table for the period 2010
to 2013.
1. Real GDP Growth
2. GDP per capita
3. Current Account Balance
4. Australian merchandise trade with the chosen country, showing exports imports and
total trade
5. Australian Total Investment in the chosen country and the Total Investment in
Australia by the chosen country
6. Australia’s major exports to the chosen country and Australia’s major imports from
the chosen country. Please provide both the item description (eg Coal, Gold etc as
well as the value in Australian dollars.
Finally write briefly about the key things you have learned and you think are important about
your table with regard to International Management (approximately 500 words).
