Audit of Cycle Infrastructure

1Specification
This exercise requires an audit of a carefully selected site which demonstrates the design of cycling -focused infrastructure. The audit will include description, review and comparison with guidelines and standards.
This assignment requires you to:
•Identify from your own observation one example of cycle-specific infrastructure;
•Describe your example, including a sketch, photographs or other illustrations;
•Compare your example with cases identified in the literature or good practice guidelines to demonstrate evidence of good practice in design;
•Provide a critical review including reference to design weaknesses and possible improvements.
The specific objectives of this coursework assignment are:
•To develop an awareness of transport engineering techniques and design issues which facilitate cycling;
•To develop powers of critical analysis in the context of design practice.
2 Research resources
Typical points which have emerged from previous student assignments are listed below, as general issues for comment. It is not suggested that you will need to comment on all of these for your own case. There may also be extra points which are relevant to your example, but which are not covered here. However, it is intended to give you an idea of the sort of discussion points which you may wish to consider as part of your own critical review
Cycle lanes:
• Widths; narrowings; by-passes;
• Drainage
• Advisory vs mandatory
• Parked vehicles; bus stops
• Maintenance; surface quality
• Time of operation
• Termination and start
• Enforcement
•Colour; materials
• Signing; marking
General
• Continuity; network issues

3 Output required
The submission must be in MSWord format and should not exceed 1800 words (excluding photographs, illustrations, appendices and references). There should be an appropriate report structure with numbered sections and headings. References should be listed and cited according to the Harvard convention.
. The case study
Cross lane Street in Salford in Manchester
As it can be seen in Google maps image, Cross lane is a street connecting Liverpool Street and Crescent Road
NOTE
I think that there is a serious risk that you will fail this assessment if you choose to continue to present your audit based on this proposed design, rather than on an existing example of cycle infrastructure, as requested in the brief.
Basis of assessment
Clear description of the chosen example including the specific cycle –related design features
Evaluation of the design features (strengths and weakness) including a comparison with example of good practices
Quality of the presentation
Summary reflection on your feedback
