auto-ethnographies

1) KON Satoshi loves films, and he loves people who love films—he is a true cinéphile. Discuss how his animé make homage to the stars, styles, genres and/or themes of Japanese cinema. Make reference to at least 2 films we have watched in class (others are fine, in addition).

2) Matt Hills proposes that we do fan “auto-ethnographies” in order to understand the cultural and intellectual (and, perhaps, emotional) work done by cinéphiles. How does this attempt to address or shape some of the limits that he finds in many examples of fan culture? What makes his effort different than just being a fan, or hanging out with fans?
