Balancing Diversity In The Supply Base Against The Search For Lower Costs and Corporate Social Responsibility

Balancing Diversity In The Supply Base Against The Search For Lower Costs and Corporate Social Responsibility

In recent years, supply chains have become increasingly more complex (lengthier and far more globalised, for example) and therefore more challenging, in regard to their effective management.
Discuss two different key areas, currently posing significant challenges for contemporary supply chain managers. Examine the specific challenges being faced and the strategies and methods being employed to overcome such problems.
The two topics are –
The issue of ?balancing diversity in the supply base against the search for lower costs’; many companies have now recently come to appreciate the risk associated with dealing with a small number of suppliers (Hornby, Toyota), leading to the advent of firms ?re-shoring’ in some cases.

?Corporate Social Responsibility’ in the supply chain has also been a major issue of late, in particular with regard to the extended chains for food production (most prominently, issues of accountability and traceability associated with the European horse meat scandal of 2012/13); an issue which also questioned the idea of achieving sustainability in the supply chain.

You will find it both useful and necessary, to draw on a wide variety of organisational examples to illustrate your points and develop your argument.
