Red-green color blindness is inherited through an X-linked recessive allele. This means that the allele (form of the gene) is found only on the X chromosome but NOT on the Y chromosome of the male. Female humans are XX but male humans are XY. Since the Y chromosome has no corresponding genes for any of the genes on the X chromosome, any gene either recessive or dominant on the X chromosome of the male will be expressed in the male(there is nothing to cover up its expression since the male does not have a second similar chromosome). Let’s call the allele b for color blindness and the allele B for normal color vision. Two parents, John and Sally, have normal vision. They have two daughters, Sue and Michelle, who have normal vision and a color-blind son named Jerry.

Daughter Michelle has a color-blind son, Pete. Daughter Sue has five sons, all with normal vision. What are the genotypes of all the individuals? Remember since this gene is sex-linked, you will need to include which form dominant (B) or recessive (b) is on each X chromosome in the following people. Do not put any form of the B/b gene on the Y chromosome since it does not contain any allele for that gene.

John____________________

Sally____________________

Sue ____________________

Michelle_________________

Jerry___________________

Pete____________________

Sue’s five sons____________
