“The UK has always been fortunate in having abundant energy sources. In the Middle Ages, fast flowing rivers were used to turn water-wheels while, in the early 19th century, the use of steam from coal, enabled Britain to become the world’s first industrialized country. This shaped both the economy and the population of Britain for the next 200 years.
