Imagine that you have been hired as a research consultant at a premier children’s school. The director of the school has asked that you investigate a few different television programs and provide a recommendation that can be passed on to parents. The first program under investigation is Spongebob Squarepants. The director wants to know whether it is suitable for children aged 3 to 8 years old. To begin this project you will need to develop behavioral categories or a coding scheme (i.e., operational definitions). Start by listing examples of potential behaviors that could relate to aggression and to cooperation/helping. Remember, this is a cartoon so exaggerated violence might be present and friends playing together might be an example of cooperation. 1) Develop four operational definitions of aggressive and cooperative behaviors that you can code while watching cartoons. 2) Then, what precautions or strategies would use to make sure your data were valid and reliable.
