Building a case for Urban Agriculture”

Based upon research from Assignment 1 (document attached)– and any other information at your disposal, you are to build a case for urban agriculture in an urban, Third World setting.

1. In general, using appropriate references, graphics, and statistics, make a case for

a) the ‘legitimacy’ of urban agriculture within the framework of other urban departments, and b) the ‘prioritization’ of urban agriculture over most other urban programs.

2. In specific, find two case studies from Less Developed Country (LDC) situations that help prove your point/hypothesis re: the need / justification for a greater role for urban agriculture in today’s Third World cities.

3. To do: Write a brief report to an important United Nations decision-maker (someone who has to make a decision regarding $20 million US in funding for urban projects in these LDC regions). As director of a small but important non-governmental organization working on such issues, you and your people could use the money. Use any statistics, graphics, etc. that will help your case.

Hints:

· Think about ‘internal coherence’, and ‘external functionality’ of urban agriculture;

· think about other urban services (potential competition), and how UA compares in terms of priorities;

· look into what has worked and what hasn’t worked (lessons learned/things to be avoided that a potential sponsor might be interested in);

· make sure the potential sponsor understands why you chose the case studies you did, and why you feel your general ideas on the subject are reasonable, and just waiting for funding to kickstart important programs around the world.
