Term Project Description
Introduction
Students will work on a BIM related project in one of following categories,
? Category One: BIM for owners or facilities managers
? Category Two: BIM for contractors
? Category Three: BIM for subcontractors, suppliers or fabricators
? Category Four: BIM for architects or engineers
Students need to determine a BIM application in one category as their term project topic. For example,
a student group (called “Group A”) may be interested in BIM benefits for contractors and exploring how
to synchronize design and construction planning in depth. So, the topic of their term project can be
“synchronizing design and construction planning.”
Each category may have one or more student groups depending on the number of students in this
course. Each group can have no more than three students.
Throughout the course, students need to continuously work on the project including:
? Perform a review of BIM literature related to the selected topic or application. For example,
Group A will do a literature review to determine 1) what does it mean to synchronize design and
construction planning? 2) what are the benefits of and challenges for such an application? 3)
How can BIM be implemented to realize the benefits and mitigate the challenges?
? Select a sample project and develop a BIM model to demonstrate how BIM can deliver the
benefits and meet the challenges. For example, after literature review, a team has a clear
understanding about the application. Then they select a reasonable size building such as the
Wendy’s restaurant. In the model, they deliberately model those features that can help them
discuss and demonstrate the benefits and the challenges. Some sample projects that students
may use can be found at http://cmfac.groups.et.byu.net/miller/projects/index.php. Choose
either residential or simple commercial buildings.
? Write the final report.
In the building information model, students are required to complete:
1. A simple, maybe hypothetical site,
2. Building envelope,
3. Interior partitions, floors and ceilings,
4. Stairs, if any
The building model needs to have sufficient details to demonstrate applications in the selected category.

Deliverables
Each group will need to deliver:
1) A BIM model that can demonstrate the intended business application; and
2) The final report
? An introduction of the selected application
? A comprehensive and relevant literature review
? A detailed discussion of your approach (how benefits are delivered and challenges are met)
? A detailed discussion of your model and data
? Conclusions and future studies
