In completing this assignment, you are required to demonstrate that you have learnt and can apply the concepts covered in the course. We are not overly interested in your knowledge of your chosen organization, but rather in the way in which you use that knowledge to demonstrate that you have understood the concepts in the course. Accordingly, a general essay on your chosen organization will attract very few marks. Please also note that this is a significant piece of work, and its successful completion requires some independent learning, thinking and work. While the following assignment guidelines must be followed, the assignment allows you significant scope to explore and develop your understanding of Business Information Systems in accordance with your own interests.
Choose one organization that offers customer services and/or transactions over the Internet and also interacts with customers through ‘brick’ or other channels (e.g. telephone). Typical examples are banks, clothing retailers, supermarkets, electrical goods retailers, estate agents, some football clubs, etc. Having chosen your organization you are required to investigate, evaluate and produce a report that addresses the following.
1. The organization’s aims and objectives, the sector it is in, and its main competitors
2. The function of the organization’s website. Briefly consider such things as what services/transactions are available through the website? Does the website host a virtual community or provide information about its products? Does it announce promotions or special offers? What links are there to other channels?
3. The information this allows the organisation to collect about its customers and potential customers (age, gender, marital status, purchase patterns); about its products/services (interest, total sales, sales by geographic location) and so on.
4. Based on this, draw on academic evidence (text books and journal articles) to discuss and evaluate how the website and the information it gathers might help the organization maintain or gain competitive advantage through the use of business information systems
5. Present recommendations for your chosen organization with respect to how it might further exploit business information systems taking into account your findings in section 3.
