3 MODULE OVERVIEW
Aims
This module aims to broaden and expand students’ knowledge and
understanding of the concepts, tools and techniques of operations management.
Students will develop analytical insights into current operations management
practices, explore the priorities and techniques of operations management and
employ these to the design, operation and control of business processes.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy
Student learning is supported through a variety of teaching methods. Lectures are
designed to deliver background material to enable analysis of the theory of
operations management and their applications. Lectures are supported by
PowerPoint presentations and videos which demonstrate examples of operations
management used in real businesses. Online practical exercises and case
studies are used to relate the theory to practice and enable students to apply their
modelling skills. Students are supported by drop-in workshops. The module’s online
environment will contain all lecture slides and any additional learning material
required for this module. For example, the online module site will contain
additional material to support professional practice and formative assessment
tasks to help students prepare for the summative assessment.

1 You should attend all scheduled Lectures (one per week, either Lecture A or
Lecture B). Before each lecture print out the lecture slides from myUniHub. Bring
the lecture slides, textbook, notebook, pen and calculator with you to the lecture.
Note that there may be changes to the lecture schedule illustrated on the next
page. Some chapters may be partly covered on the preceding and/or following
lectures to allow additional time for more complicated topics. However, this will
not affect the assessment schedule.
2 You should only attend the Drop-in sessions if you need additional support. You
can attend any, all or none of the sessions depending on your needs. Note that
before seeking assistance in the drop-in sessions, you must have attempted to
solve the exercises by yourself. You must keep a clear record of your calculations
in a notebook and bring this book with you to the drop-in sessions. You should
also bring with you the textbook, lecture slides, pen and calculator. The module
team will not solve the on-line exercises for you but will advise you and direct you
to a variety of resources that can help you to solve the exercises. There are
limited spaces available at any drop-in session. If all computers are occupied,
please wait until a station becomes available. Do not use a computer during the
drop-in sessions for personal use, or to work on all of your on-line exercises so
that other students can have the opportunity to clarify issues with the tutor.

5 ASSESSMENT
Assessment Weighting
• Individual Coursework in the form of 4 portfolios of exercises: 60% (15%
each)
• Two in-class tests: 40% (20% each)
All component marks are aggregated to determine an overall module grade; in
order to pass the module it is necessary to attain an aggregate pass level, and
not necessarily to pass each individual task. To pass the module, students need
to achieve an overall average mark of 40% and above.
Assessment Components
Details of the assessment components are:
i. Individual coursework in the form of 4 portfolios (60%).
• Each portfolio is worth 15%.
• All portfolio exercises must be completed individually (by yourself)
• Portfolios are conducted entirely on-line through Connect (more details
in Chapter 8) where students have the opportunity to apply the relevant
concepts of operations management to solve operations related
problems, using a variety, and varying amount, of data and information.
Students have unlimited opportunities to access and work with the
portfolio exercises until the deadline for each portfolio.
• You must not be late in submitting your work through Connect. Late
submissions will not be accepted. Please be aware that Connect can
get very busy close to the submission time, so please try to aim to
submit your work earlier. No extensions will be given.
• If you are unable to submit your work on time, you must seek a deferral
from UniHelp. (Please note that neither the module leader nor the
module tutor will be able to grant deferrals). If you have acceptable
extenuating circumstances and satisfy the requirements for a deferral,
a new deadline will be granted for you to complete all the exercises in
the portfolio for which you have a deferral for (these will be different
exercises).
• If you are unable to submit any portfolio on time and do not have a
deferral, you will be given 0% for that portfolio.
• Any grades you see on Connect and myUniHub will be unconfirmed
grades, as grades can only be confirmed at the assessment board, and
these grades may change.
• Any problems with Connect or myUniHub must be reported
immediately by email to Anna Lassila so that they can be rectified
before the submission deadline.

• The details including the deadline for each of these portfolios are as
follows:
– Portfolio 1: This portfolio consists of three groups of exercises
relevant to what you have learned in weeks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and
the corresponding chapters in the core textbook are chapters 1,
2 and 3. At the beginning of each week (beginning in week 1), a
group of exercises will be released on Connect. You are advised
to attempt and submit your responses each week to lessen your
workload. You must complete and submit all 3 groups of
exercises no later than the deadline of 10 pm on 24 November
2013. You can only access and submit the exercises through
Connect.
– Portfolio 2: This portfolio consists of five groups of exercises
relevant to what you have learnt in weeks 7, 8, 9 and 10 and the
corresponding chapters in the core textbook are chapters 4, 5, 6,
7 and 8. At the beginning of each week, a group of exercises
will be released on Connect. You are advised to attempt and
submit your responses each week to lessen your workload. You
must complete and submit all 5 groups of exercises no later than
the deadline of 10 pm on 22 December 2013. You can only
access and submit the exercises through Connect.
– Portfolio 3: This portfolio consists of four groups of exercises
relevant to what you have learnt in weeks 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and
16 and the corresponding chapters in the core textbook are
chapters 9, 10, 11 and 12. At the beginning of each week, a
group of exercises will be released on Connect. You are
advised to attempt and submit your responses each week to
lessen your workload. You must complete and submit all 4
groups of exercises no later than the deadline of 10 pm on 02
March 2014. You can only access and submit the exercises
through Connect.
– Portfolio 4: This portfolio consists of five groups of exercises
relevant to what you have learnt in weeks 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, and
23 and the corresponding chapters in the core textbook are
chapters 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17. In addition, you are required to
study chapter 3 in the Heizer and Render (2013). At the
beginning of each week, a group of exercises will be released on
Connect. You are advised to attempt and submit your
responses each week to lessen your workload. You must
complete and submit all 5 groups of exercises no later than the
deadline of 10 pm on 17 April 2014. You can only access and
submit the exercises through Connect.

ii. Two individual tests (20% each).
• Each test takes place in-class.
• The tests are ‘closed book’, i.e. you are not allowed to access any
books or notes during the tests. You are not allowed to bring any
electronic devises into the test room, except a calculator. You are
not allowed to use a mobile phone as a calculator.
• Each test may contain one, more, or all of the following types of
questions:
– Multiple choice questions (where you have to select the
correct answer from a selection of possible answers)
– True-or-false questions (where you have to select whether
the question statement is true or false)
– Questions where you have to conduct some calculations and
type in your answers
• You will have 40 minutes to complete each test.
• Each test consists of 25 questions.
• You will only be able to attempt each test once.
• Tests must be completed individually.
• You must bring your student ID with you to each test so that your
identity can be verified.
• The tests are paper-based and you must mark your answer clearly
following the instructions on the test paper. If your have indicated
multiple answers or your answer cannot be read then you will
receive zero points for that question.
• If you are unable to attend either of the in-class tests, you must
seek a deferral from the UniHelp. (Please note that neither the
module leader nor the module tutor will be able to grant deferrals). If
you have acceptable extenuating circumstances and satisfy the
requirements for a deferral, a new deadline will be granted for you
to that the test for which you have a deferral for.
• If you are unable to take a test and do not have a deferral, you will
be given 0% for that test.
• Any grades you see on myUniHub will be unconfirmed grades, as
grades can only be confirmed at the assessment board, and these
grades may change.

Deferrals
A student may apply for a deferral, through UniHelp when the student has
documented good cause to defer. Deferral will mean taking the substitute
assessment; it does not mean handing in the current work later on. A deferral
can be granted in exceptional circumstances, usually on medical grounds, and
only when a reassessment opportunity will be available at a future point.
Students must apply to the assessment manager in writing, submitting supporting
documentation. The application for deferral must be submitted without a delay.
The applications that have been unjustifiably delayed will not be processed. To
help the module team keep track of deferrals, the student should inform the
module leader of his/her intentions to apply for deferral before doing so. Deferral
means that you have the opportunity to undertake and submit your assessment
(please note that this can be a different assessment) at a later date, decided
between the School and the Module Leader. If a student receives a deferral, they
should immediately forward the approval email to the module leader to discuss
the next possible date for the student to undertake the missed assessment. This
arrangement is intended to help students to complete the module within the
schedule. Please note that self-deferral is not allowed in the Business School. For
more information about the deferral process, please go to UniHub.
A deferral can only be given to a whole Portfolio, not to a Part of a Portfolio, e.g. if
you apply for a deferral for Portfolio 1 Part 3, your deferral, if granted, will be for
whole Portfolio 1. This means that you will need to retake all parts of that Portfolio
(note that these will be different exercises). You will not be able to carry on your
marks for the other Parts of that Portfolio (i.e. you will need to start with zero
points).
Re-assessment
The final module grades will be published on MISIS on 23 June 2014. If students
fail the module (fail grades are 17, 18, 19, 20 with an overall mark between 0%
and 39%) they are eligible for a re-sit. The re-sit consists of two pieces of
assessment: a Portfolio and a Test. Students will be re-examined only in the
assessed component(s) which they have failed. For example, if your overall mark
for the online Portfolios falls between 0% and 39%, you will have to retake an
online Portfolio of exercises that covers chapters 1-17 in the core textbook. If
your mark for the tests falls between 0% and 39%, you will have to retake a Test
that covers chapters 1-17 in the core textbook.
Detailed information about the re-assessment will be available in a folder called
‘Re-sits’ on the MGT2220 page in UniHub on 15 July 2013. Make sure you read
this document carefully if you have failed the module. The submission deadline
for the re-sit portfolio in MGT2220 will be at 12 noon on 29 August 2014. The resit
test will take place in-class during the August re-sit period (26 August to 3
September 2014). If you have failed the module then you must be available to
attend the re-sit test during that period.

can discuss your ideas with them.

Connect is a dynamic and interactive e-Learning program designed to help
students to practise operations management problems and improve their
understanding of the concepts of the course. For this module students need to
access Connect to complete and submit four portfolios of exercises.
To access your Connect online course, you need to register. Whenever you want
to use Connect after that, you just need to log in. You can do both of these from
the same web page:

must ensure that you use the correct URL when accessing the assessment. Any
assessment completed on the wrong module page will NOT count towards your

Register for Connect
To register, you will need a unique student registration code and the module web
address (URL). A student registration code has been created for you and is
available in ‘Grades on the MGT2220 page in myUniHub. Please go to look it up
now and write it down below. Note that you must input the code using capital
letters. The web address for you module is shown below (and is also available in
myUniHub).

Each registration code can be registered only once, so make sure you complete
the registration process correctly. Note that each code has an expiry date. You
must register your registration code before the expiry date, which is the 31st of

Unsupported Browser’. The site will display and function correctly despite
this message.
3. Once on the ‘McGraw-Hill Connect – Welcome!’ site, check that the class
details on the right are correct (They should read as follows: Course:

4. If you are on the correct site, click the ‘Register now’ button on the bottom
right corner of the page. (If the details on the right are not correct, then
check that you have typed the URL correctly. If you continue to have
problems please contact your tutor)
5. On the ‘Student Registration’ page enter your university email address.
Click ‘Submit’.
6. Next you are asked if you ‘Have a registration code?’ Enter your
Registration code (you can find this in ‘Grades’ on MGT2220 page in
myUniHub) in capital letters and select ‘Submit’.
7. On the ‘Registration: Create an Account’ page, you need to first create
your account. Check that your university email address is correct and then
re-type it.
8. Create a ‘Password’. Your password must be at least 6 characters long
and must not contain spaces. Choose something that is easy for you to
remember but difficult for others to guess.
9. Re-type your password.
10. Enter your Name. In the first box type your first name, in the second
smaller box enter the first letter of your middle name (if applicable) and in
the third box enter your last name (you must enter your name as it appear
in your student ID). Make sure you enter your personal details correctly so
that your grades will be recorded. If the name you have entered does not
appear in the student records, you will be disconnected from the site and
all your marks are lost.
11. Next you are asked to ‘Tell us about your school’. For ‘Country’ select
United Kingdom.
12. For ‘State’ enter England.
13. For ‘School’,if text ‘No Schools Found’ appears then click ‘My school is not
listed’ link below the box. Now type ‘Middlesex University (London)’ in the
box.
14. Next you are asked to ‘Tell us some security information’. To protect your
account, select a security question from the drop down menu and enter
your answer.
15. Enter a secondary email address if you have one.
16. Review the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Then select the ‘I Accept’
box to continue.
17. Select the ‘I’d like to receive information about other McGraw-Hill products,
services and promotions that relate to my course…’ box if you want to be
contacted by the publisher.

18. Click ‘Complete My Registration’ to submit your registration.
19. The ‘Student Registration: Complete’ page indicates that your registration
has been successful.
20. Click the ‘Go to Connect Now’ link to enter the Connect site. You’ll be

21. ‘Updates and notices’ pop up window may appear with messages from the
Connect administrators (these are not messages from your module leader
or tutors). You can ignore this and select ‘close this window’ to continue to
Connect.
22. When you see ‘Operations Management 2013-14 – MGT2220 HEN 2013-
14’ at the top of the page with McGraw-Hill Connect logo, you are at the
right module site and can start to work with your assignments. In the top
menu you can see three sections: ‘home’ (currently displayed), ‘library’ and
‘reports’. In the ‘home’ section you can view and access your assignments
(All online Portfolios that you need to complete will appear on this page.
Remember that 60% of your grade will come from the portfolio exercises
taken in Connect, so keep your account details safe.). Under ‘reports’ you
can view your results. The ‘library’ section is not used in this module and
will be empty.
23. Remember to click the ‘sign out’ link in the upper right corner of the screen
when you have finished. To protect your account close the browser
window before leaving the computer. Remember to keep your Password
safe. Do not let anyone else to use it as all actions taken in Connect using
your account details will be recorded and count towards your final grade.
All assessment in Connect must be completed individually.
24. To Login into Connect again, follow the instructions below. You do not
need to register again!

Guide for Connect
You can use either Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer to access Connect. Any
problems with the Connect site must be reported immediately by email to Anna
Lassila. Note that the dates in Connect follow the American system, i.e.
MM/DD/YY.
You can find Portfolios 1, 2, 3 and 4 in Connect ‘home’ page. Note that some
assignments can be visible for you early on the site but you will not be able to
access them until the dates given in your assessment schedule (see page 10).
Portfolios that are available for you are highlighted in blue. To access the
assignment, click the assignment title. You can navigate the questions in the
assignment by using the drop-down menu on top of the page. Note that most
assignments will have more than one question. For portfolios, you can at any time
click ‘save & exit’ button to leave the assignment. If you exit this way your
answers will be saved and you can return later to continue your work. If you click
‘submit assignment’ your work is submitted and you will not be able to continue it
later. However, you have unlimited number of attempts for each portfolio until the
submission deadline for that portfolio. You can view your assignment marks in the
‘reports’ section.
9 myUniHub
myUniHub is a virtual learning environment used by Middlesex University. In this
module the student needs to access the MGT2220 page in myUniHub to obtain
up-to-date module information, and view and print the lecture slides. You can
access myUniHub either at https://myunihub.mdx.ac.uk or through the link on
UniHub (http://unihub.mdx.ac.uk/). You will need a User ID and a Password to
login to myUniHub. Once you have logged into myUniHub (If you still cannot gain
access, please contact the UniHelp at Sheppard Library) go to MyStudy. Under
MyLearning you can see your Learning Modules and if you are fully enrolled and
have registered for the correct modules one of them should be MGT2220-
Operations Management.
