Care of the Older Person Assignment –
Case study – Example
By Dr Peter McErlain
Introduction
This paper will analyse the case study of Uncle Bill. (Name has been changed) It will
give an overview of his health issues and will focus on the osteoarthritis in his knees
and always drawing on an aging perspective.. There will be an emphasis on pain
management because this is his biggest area of concern. Pain also impacts on many
aspects of Uncle Bill’s life and is foundational to his happiness and quality of life. The
literature will be drawn upon to help meet Uncle Bill’s specific needs. This will include
a discussion about osteoarthritis of the knees and treatment options. The relevant
literature will be drawn upon throughout the paper and analysed.
Insights into the aging theories/models, age related sociological perspectives, aging
physiological changes or other aging related ideas will be drawn upon and
demonstrated throughout the paper.
The paper will demonstrate a person centred perspective through focusing on Uncle
Bill’s unique needs and desires with particular attention to his love of golf and
gardening. The interconnection of Uncle Bill’s health issues and his unique situation
will be discussed throughout the paper and the writer will demonstrate insight into
this complexity.
Finally the writer will outline some recommendations for Uncle Bill.
Uncle Bill
Uncle Bill’s situation and health history details are in appendix A. The significant
issues from this are that his osteoarthritis of his knees impacts on his ability to play
golf and pick up things from the ground. The pain also impacts on his sleep and
general irritability. … Although sleep is an important issue for Uncle Bill, due to word
limit constraints this will only be briefly discussed. …

Osteoarthritis is the inflammation of joints due to …(Baxter 2007) The literature is
mixed in relation to when to have knee replacement. Righter (2009) argues that this
should be done early in the disease’s progression, where as Wright (2009) argues
that there should be greater emphasis on weight loss and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Wright’s study was supported with pharmaceutical funding and this reduces its
weight of argument. …
Uncle Bill has tried the anti-inflammatory drug indocid and this lead to him having a
gastric bleed in the past. He is reluctant to use these and has been using
glucosamine. There evidence for its use is mixed with Garrard’s (2010) research
showing …..
Recommendations for Uncle Bill
It would be great if Uncle Bill lost weight but his reduced walking makes it hard to
walk and exercise. He is also my Uncle so I feel uncomfortable in talking to him about
weight loss. In doing this I will draw on relevant aged related issues including…
Conclusion
This paper has set out the case study of my Uncle Bill with a focus on osteoarthritis
in his knees ….
It would have benefited Uncle Bill a great deal to have had a focus early on in relation
to prevention of his obesity. This would have been economically better for the health
system and for Uncle Bill. This reminds us all that prevention is better than cure.
