ing essay, identify any ambiguous wording or missing information, as
discussed in Chapters 1 and 7.
Authors sometimes commit logical fallacies when they make their argu-
merits. Logical fallacies take many forms. Here you will only learn about
the most common forms. The first type of logical fallacy is when authors
make hasty generalizations. That is, the author may write only about a
specific occurrence but will apply her conclusions to all other similar
occurrences. Another type of logical fallacy is an emotional appeal,
whereby the author uses the reader‘s emotions to detract him from the
argument being made. Authors sometimes commit an ad hominem fallacy.
meaning that the author will attack the person, rather than her ideas.
Another type of logical fallacy is when authors attribute causation to two
items related only by correlation. An infamous example of this fallacy is
the relationship between lunar cycles and women’s menstrual cycles.
Because both cycles are about the same length, 27 to 28 days, many
people used to believe that lunar cycles caused women‘s menstrual

The United States is, arguably. the most developed country in the world.
Our economy is soaring, industry is booming, and resources are abundant. The
incredible growth of the United States since its settlement by the British is due “if
to the discovery of oil. Oil has allowed us to grow; it has created industries, 3:”
appliances, and objects that most Americans could not live Without. Recently, f-
environmentalis‘ts have called for funding of alternative energy through federal
grants. Such handouts are a poor use of taxpayer money, which will be wasted
in the development of these inefficient forms of energy.
Oil is an incredibly efficient source of energy; in fact, it is the most effi- 0
cient source to date. Such high efficiency means that oil is a very economical I
source of energy, providing a lot of “bang for the buck.“ Other forms of energy 1
are simply not as efficient as oil and, therefore, not as cheap.
Predictions of the decline of oil have not been borne out. It was not that
long ago that environmentalists were claiming oil would only last until 1950,
and then until 1990. and then until 2010. The truth is that oil is plentiful.
Estimates of reserves by geologists continue to grow larger, both for US. un-
tapped oil and for that of foreign countries. Doomsday scenarios. such as those
created by environmentalists. are simply not coming true.
