The Professor’s Instructions:
You are required to develop a case study of the globalizing (and dual) city of São Paulo. The paper consists of three parts: 1). Introduction: Issues for the city to be developed should include the themes/concepts of Evans’ livability (livelihood and ecological sustainability), globalization and urbaniztion. It is in your introduction that A STRONG THESIS MUST BE COMMUNICATED which will be proven throughout the paper 2). Examine the city in its larger system, looking at conditions of urban change relative to national and/or regional and/or global levels; 3). Go in depth at a more local level of scale to examine issues of urban change in one or more areas (a program, a space, a neighborhood, a community, a zone) within the city. For this section, it is advisable for you to utilize Keck’s article “Water, Water, Everywhere, Nor Any Drop to Drink” and perhaps one or two case studies regarding favela upgrades included near the end of UN-Habitat (2010) A Tale of Two Cities São Paulo.
