Character Analysis

Your paper should focus on any literary work (a short story, a novel, a poem, or a play), and a literary work may come from any source, not necessarily from our textbook). Remember it must be an essay on fiction, or poetry, or drama.

Choose one of the prompts below:

1. Write a Character Analysis Essay

Write a character analysis of a character in a short story or play. You can focus on a major or a minor character, examining the character’s language, behavior, background, interaction with other characters, and reaction to his or her environment. Everything you are told about a character— and everything you can reasonably infer about him or her from words, actions, or appearance— can help you to understand the character.

In your analysis, you can focus on the influences that shaped the character, the character’s effect on others, how the character changes during the course of the story or play, or what motivates him or her to act (or not to act).

Please review Chapter 2 “Writing Special Kinds of Papers” in your textbook, pages 38-39.

This essay must be 1000 –1200 words minimum, using MLA formatting. You are required to use 4-10 outside sources, in addition to your textbook. You are to limit the number of block quotes to two (2) or less.

Also, free essays, Wikipedia, Cliff’s Notes, SparkNotes, Gradesaver, overviews, and any kinds of notes should NOT be used because it will be cheating.

Use overviews as a reference and not as a source unless it offers literary criticism.

All Web pages must have my approval, and they must be credible sources. Use TCC Databases. They have wealth of information. Watch the Library presentations/tutorials.

Please remember: I am not interested in the author’s bio; his or her biography is not a part of this assignment. Please also read Grading Rubric and follow it because this is what I am going to use to grade your assignment.
