Character Sketch

Description and Guidelines

This worksheet is a starting point for analyzing your role. Using your imagination and the play as resources, type out the answers to the following questions in as much detail and as specifically as possible (please include the questions before each answer). Re-read the play first, with these questions in mind, and answer as the character would. You must complete this worksheet for both of your scenes. See the syllabus for due dates.

A. Physical Silhouette
o Character’s age, weight, height.
o Type and quality of speech. Dialect. Vocabulary. Register.
o Characteristics of walking, sitting, running, dancing, laughing, crying.
o Sensitive/insensitive; joyful/defensive; physical demeanor.
o Particular mannerisms or idiosyncrasies.
o Nationality, section of the country, province or region.
o Level of vitality.
B. Psychological Silhouette
o What is the character’s environment that would impress upon his psychology? (Particularity of region, country, or town. Weather, season, time period.)
o What is the character’s self-concept?
o How does the character behave under emotional stress? (Reaction to fear, anger, love, greed, jealousy.)
o What is the character’s outlook on life? (Optimistic or pessimistic?)
C. Character Biography
o Childhood. Adolescence. Middle age. Old age.
o Educational background.
o Occupation.
o Religion.
o Political beliefs.
o Family background (grandparents, parents, siblings, children.)
o Marital status.
o Sexual orientation.
o Hobbies.
o Home life, social life.
o Style of dress.
o Historical context.
