Chemistry

Reactivity of M-C bonds and catalytiv formation of heterocycles

Project description
Please also see the Word Document attached. More details shown in it.
Tasks
1. Write a brief report (1 page) outlining the key background to the project (CH activation, particularly AMLA/CMD, some on catalysis with heterocycles)
2. Write up all procedures with details describing how experiments to be carried out. Include how to synthesise ligands and preparation of metal complexes, which are complexes (1), (2), (3) and (4).

In task 1, please refer to the article I have attached and also some suggested articles. Briefly introduce the 3 key concepts (CH activation, Heterocycle synthesis by oxidative catalysis, and AMLA and CMD (Concerted metallation deprotonation)) stating what they are/ mean and also how to apply these in this whole experiment.

In task 2, please refer to the Objectives.
Objectives
1. Prepare functionalised heterocycles e.g. 1 and cyclometallated complexes 2
2. Investigate reactivity of 2 with alkynes to form 3/4
3 Investigate catalytic reactivity of 2 with alkynes
4 Try reactions with different directing groups (e.g. pyridine in place of imine) and/or with the directing group in a different position on the heterocycle.

In the experiment, the objectives shown above have to be included.
In this task, the following must be included.

– How to prepare functionalised heterocycles e.g. 1 (X= O,S, NH or NR)
What starting materials, solvent, chemicals, solutions, methods, temperatures, chemical equipment, etc…have to be used, and also the time, how long each step will take

– How to prepare different cyclometallated complexes 2 from different heterocycles 1
– Investigate reactivity of different 2 with alkynes to form 3/4
What experiments have to be processed in order to investigate the reactivity of different 2 with different alkynes to form 3/4

– Try reactions with different directing groups (e.g. pyridine in place of imine) and/or with the directing group in a different position on the heterocycle.
How will these reactions be carried out? what experiments are needed?
How to make these pyridine-containing complexes and with the directing group in different position

While writing up the procedures for each part of experiments, please include…
starting materials, solvent, chemicals, solutions, methods, temperatures, chemical equipment, what types of analysis will be used etc…everything that has to be used, and also the time, how long each step will take. That’s what have to be done from the beginning till the analysis (e.g NMR, IR…)
provide formula of each step / experiment.
provide methods how to do the comparison of the reactivity of complexes.

The procedures are required be written in paragraphs instead of tables or in point form.

Assume that the procedures are read by a non-chemist who totally has no sense of chemistry. Therefore, all have to be in detail just like a cooking recipe with ingredients, amounts, temperature, time, etc.
