Claim of Fact

The Assignment
For this second essay, you will be asserting and defending with substantive evidence a claim of fact. Recall that our textbook shows that claims of fact “assert that a condition has existed, exists, or will exist and are based on facts or data that the audience will accept as being objectively verifiable” (Rottenberg & Winchell 10, emphasis mine). In other words, your claim of fact must prove that a particular statement is either true or false by using verifiable, factual information such as statistics, examples, expert testimony, etc.

While the method of exposition is limited, your topic needn’t be. For while the claim of fact sounds restricting, in reality consider your range of choices: Make a prediction, assert causes for a current phenomenon, defend or refute a conspiracy theory, argue for or against the constitutionality of an action or law, defend or refute an advertising claim.

WARNING: DO NOT JUDGE YOUR TOPIC (VALUE), NOR SUGGEST A COURSE OF ACTION (POLICY)!! Remember that this particular essay is all about the “Claim of Fact.”
Logistics
The essay needs to be 4-5 pages in length, typed, and double-spaced. Use MLA to format and cite sources and include a properly formatted Works Cited page. The Works Cited page does not count toward the 4-5 page range.
