Your task as you work on the next paper assignment is to track down a source and evaluate it in terms of its reliability, credibility, potential bias, and evaluate whether the topic and article are appropriate for the current paper assignment.
Answer the following questions, offering as much information, examples, or evidence as possible. Keep in mind that you may need to do some additional research to evaluate the source if not all the information is present for your source.
Who is the author of your source? Are they an expert on the topic? What are their qualifications for commenting on the topic?
Who is the publisher? Are they reliable? What are their motivations for producing the article in question (to inform, persuade, entertain, advertise, etc.)? Does the publisher have any evident bias?
How accurate is the source? Do other sources verify the information presented by your source?
Does the article use other sources that are clearly identified, and are these sources credible?
Is the source up to date? If your topic is one which constantly changes, will readers accept this source as representing the latest information on the topic?
Try to identify the audience for the article. Who is the information written for? This could be a specific group, a specific level of expertise, or other interest groups. What does this reveal about the choices the writer has made in presenting the information?
Is the source biased? Is a personal opinion expressed or is the information factual? Does bias affect the reliability of the source?
Some elements to look for: does the source include loaded language? Does the source represent information from opposing viewpoints? Does the source distort or exaggerate any of the information?
Now, offer your final evaluation/reflection on the source. Describe if/why the source is reliable or unreliable.
