Classical and Contemporary Perspectives

There are two specific bodies of research that require critical examination:

Contemporary research, considered to have been conducted with the past 5 years, is requisite to the study of contemporary public safety

practices. For example, if one is researching alternative contemporary correctional interventions, an analysis of the recidivism rates

from boot camps is required.

On the other hand, it is significant to examine the research of the classical theorists to ascertain if their theoretical perspectives

have efficacy in understanding and solving contemporary problems facing public safety agencies. Examining the 1920s work of Frederick

Thrasher on the etiology of gangs is relevant and critical to research pertaining to the contemporary problem of the proliferation of

violent street gangs.

The analysis of both classical and contemporary research provides a theoretical foundation to frame the research to be conducted and

answer the hypothesis or research question.
