Classification/Division Essay
Process
1. Select a topic from the list below.
• Learning Styles (http://www.nytimes.com/1993/04/25/magazine/what-s-your-learning-style.html?pagewanted=all and http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/15/
magazine/can-emotional-intelligence-be-taught.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0)
• Stress (http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/stress-facts.pdf and http://
www.nytimes.com/2015/06/21/opinion/sunday/is-your-boss-mean.html )
• Family Traditions (http://newoldage.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/12/24/when-traditions-must-change/?_r=0 and http://www.artofmanliness.com/2013/10/09/creating-a-positive-family-culture-the-importance-of-establishing-family-traditions/ )
2. Brainstorm concrete evidence and examples to support a minimum of three “things” you plan
to classify/divide. (Submit with final draft.)
3. Read the topic articles. You are expected to both quote (1-3 short quotes) and paraphrase
from each. Also, research and print an additional source to support your claims.
4. Use a pre-writing strategy in deciding how to present each category. (Submit with final draft.)
5. Develop an organizational outline. (Submit with final draft.)
6. Draft a 1000-word (3- to 4-pages), multi-paragraph, MLA-formatted essay. Embed quotes
from sources; include a Works Cited page. Make sure all body paragraphs have a strong
topic sentence, major points, commentary, and a concluding sentence.
7. Bring your most recent draft to class on October 12. You will have a peer review session.
8. Edit and revise accordingly; finalize your final draft and print a copy. (Submit hard copy to
instructor as well as the grading rubric.)
9. Complete self-analysis rubric and go over the check-off list on back. (Submit with final draft.)
10. Submit attachment (Word or PDF only) to Moodle/Turnitin by October 14.
Please note that the 101 General Course Plan of the Composition and Rhetoric Guide states you must
submit prewriting and work that “reflects multiple drafts and attention to revision principles.” If you do
not add these products, you will either “ lose significant points or not receive a grade.”
