1) Forethought
Select an elementary school mathematics textbook (grades 1-6).
If possible, use the textbook from your field placement. When this is not possible, you may use one in the Instructional Media Center [IMC] in the LIU Post Library. In other situations, be sure to obtain my approval before evaluating the textbook, so that you do not have to re-do the evaluation.
Read the NYS Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics. Read the entire document and focus on the grade level of your selected textbook. Be sure to read the Eight Standards for Mathematical Practice.
Write the title, publisher, grade level, and publication date of the textbook you have selected.
2) What is it?
List and describe in your own words each of the Content Standards for the grade level of the text described in NYS P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics (2011). Do not use the Overview of the Content Standards for this task. Summarize the complete standard including each of its sections. Number the sections of the standard to correspond to their presentation in the standards.
Describe at least one specific example from the text to demonstrate each section of each Content Standard. Provide sufficient information so that each example is clear. Explain why each selected example demonstrates the standard. In most cases, there will be multiple parts to each standard, and therefore multiple examples, and multiple explanations of why the example was selected. Label each part of each standard consistently. When selecting an example, be sure that the content of the example matches the content of the standard – exactly.
List and describe in your own words each of the Eight Standards for Mathematical Practice described in NYS P-12 Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics (2011).
Describe at least 2 specific examples from the text to demonstrate each of the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice. Provide sufficient information so that each example is clear. Explain why each selected example demonstrates the practice standard.
Suggestion: The Teacher Edition of the textbook may have more examples of the Practice Standards than the Student Edition.
Recommendation: When writing this paper, combine 2a and 2b: State and describe the standard then describe an example of that standard and why the example demonstrates that standard.
Similarly, combine 2c and 2d for each of the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice.
e) At the end of your evaluation, write a paragraph addressing each of the following. Support your position with examples from the mathematics textbook.
(1) Evaluate the text for the way it addresses diversity (ethnic, racial, gender, age, disability).
(2) Describe how students with special needs are supported.
(3) Describe how literacy is included in this text.
(4) Describe how technology is included in this text.
