Communication courses in Natural Science Schools: A web-based content analysis.

This project performed a web-based content analysis of the Natural Resources education for the communication-related curricula. It focused on the Natural Science Schools from 500 of the top scale universities across the globe. The data revealed drastic variations in curriculum design between schools across continents. European schools favored an elective-oriented approach and placed more emphasis on the graduate level; whereas American schools placed more communication-related courses at the undergraduate level, mandating them as a compulsory requirement.

Additional differences were found between the various regions around the world, including Asia and Oceania. Also differences were detected at the national developmental stages and the university ranking with regard to the overall structure of the available communication-related curriculum, as well as with the specific communication skills content, and teaching methods. Significant variations were also noted in the distribution across undergraduate and graduate levels and in compulsory and elective offerings. Our findings suggest diverse differences in communication-related curriculum design from Natural Science schools of the various infrastructures. If curriculum design is a reflection of individual University characteristics and their related internal aspects, we are cautious about the enforcement of an accreditation-led imposition of standards on Natural Science schools. Our concern is based on the fact since that the best ideas regarding communication education tailored to surrounding situations originates at the local level, therefore the specific individuality of a university plays a pivotal role.
