THE COMMUNICATIONS DILEMMA
You are new in the administration department at Miami Memorial Hospital. You job is internal communications and your boss, the head of the administration department, has indicated that you have a major challenge before you.
The new head of Miami Memorial Hospital is not trusted by many of his employees. Some grudgingly admit that Dr. John Smith came into a tough situation, but even his supporters say that he doesn’t communicate well. During Dr. Smith’s first 6 months, fifty employees were laid off; two long term care employees were demoted, resulting in grievance and lawsuits against Miami Memorial. Dr. Smith fired the education and training manager, a popular leader for eighteen years, and replaced him with a creative but emotional person from another department. Corporate organizational behavior surveys given to employees showed very low rankings on employee satisfaction and motivation. Employees were also vocal about the lack of recognition, a fear of reprisal for speaking up, and the use of organizational resources.
