This is a design research problem. Your assignment is to determine the best telephony offering available in your home community for a large church, synagogue or mosque. The existing traditional voice telephone system is currently functional, but showing signs of age and is expected to be inadequate within 5 years. The manufacturer is out of business, though usable replacement devices are still available on the resale market.
Here are the assumptions you need for this assignment:
• This organization has 20-30 employees needing phone service.
• There are 5 analog circuits providing voice service into the building today.
• The building is up to date, and has cabling able to support 100 Mbps Ethernet to every phone location.
• The existing Internet service provides adequate capacity for the data needs of the organization, but may not have enough capacity to support VoIP on the same connection.
• The church uses the data connection to deliver live CD quality audio streams to their externally hosted website and on to elderly members unable to attend in person.
• The existing on site router does not explicitly support VoIP. NAT is in use today on this device.
• The existing 48 port layer two-switch supports power over Ethernet (PoE) and can support VoIP phones for the organization.
You are to research the voice communications offerings for this church in your local area, and determine if a VoIP solution is technically feasible and cost effective compared with a traditional solution. Most locations have multiple providers of basic Internet service in the form of Verizon, AT&T, Comcast or others. Most have small business offerings that include telephony services, but which may not use VoIP technology. Voice services can also be obtained from Vonage and other “over the top” providers who leverage an existing data pipe. Research these briefly to learn about the technology they use and the small business capabilities they offer.
Then determine the best service or combination of services to purchase and install for this church, choosing the option that provides the best value for the least cost while providing some assurance of acceptable voice quality. You do not have to recommend a VoIP service, though your analysis must include at least one VoIP service option. Generate a report such as a consultant would produce showing the three best options and providing your recommendation to the church leadership. Include a cover letter addressed to Karen Frey, the organizational facilities manager that summarizes your findings. Your report must include an analysis that demonstrates the need for equipment and/or data service upgrades (if any), the costs for the conversion and equipment, and the estimated costs of monthly service after the initial installation is complete.
Aim to do this in 5 pages, using the APA format for papers. Include a list of the sources you used to produce your paper, and use inline citations to show where you used the sources in the body of your paper.
