Argument Evaluation 2
Instructions:
You are asked to write a paper of 800-1000 words, evaluating the argument given by the prosecution in the Borden Case.
Here is how you do it:
1. Read very carefully the whole story as presented by Wigmore, and make sure you have all the background information about the case.
2. Analyze the argument by following the steps as recommended by the textbook, starting with identifying the conclusion, and finally diagram the argument. (Don’t forget to supply the missing parts of the argument, if there are any.)
3. State whether the argument is deductive or inductive. Since this is a complex argument, there may well be sub-arguments which serve as support for some or perhaps all of the premises of the main argument. You need to state whether the sub-arguments are deductive or inductive. Then explain briefly why.
4. Explain how the premises (evidence) integrate into a case against Lizzie Borden.
5. Examine the premises. State which premise(s) you think is the strongest, and explain why.
6. For each category of evidence (there are 5 categories in total), determine whether (a) Lizzie Borden’s guilt is consistent with all the evidence, and (b) whether it is the only conclusion consistent with all the evidence.
7. Do you think Lizzie Borden killed her parents? If you had been on her jury, would you have voted to convict her? Why?

1. Your paper should be type-written and double-spaced.
2. Put your name, student number and course number on the first page of your paper. (A title page is not needed).
3. All Argument evaluations should be submitted electronically at Dropbox of D2L.
4. You should format your paper using Microsoft Word, Word Perfect or any compatible word processor. Do not submit your paper in PDF, which is not designed for attaching comments.
