Cultural Case Study

The second assignment requires students to critically evaluate a cultural case study. This case will be specially selected to consolidate

learning by providing students with the opportunity to think about the strategic development of culture and heritage in a tourism

destination context and to enable them to exercise problem solving and decision-making skills.

Your research project should include the following sections:

1. INTRODUCTION
In this part you have to explain briefly what this research paper is about, what is going to be included in this assignment. You have to

include the assignment’s focus, the aim to be achieved, in other words, to give the reader an indication of what is to follow. You also

outline why you embarked upon this research –why you were interested in the topic. What MENA destination did you choose and why? The

introductory text should not exceed (250 words.)

2. LITERATURE REVIEW (500 words). Average 6 academic papers.

3. OVERVIEW OF THE HUMAN & PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY OF CULTURAL DESTINATION
Overview of the physical and human geography of destination and within the context of region. Assume the reader has no knowledge of the

context of this destination and its location (500 words).

4. HISTORY & DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURAL DESTINATION (500 words).
At least last 5 years (2010-2015) development should be presented here also

5. DISCUSSION (1000 words).

A. A destination SWOT analysis ( an analysis of a cultural destination’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats )

B. Describe the significance & importance of this cultural destination. For example, is it a UNESCO heritage site? List the major cultural

sites/attractions in the destination, (include some statistical data, e.g. number of visitors by years). Why is it important to humanity

and/or to the local/national population? Explain its cultural/economic importance.

C. Explain the type of development this cultural destination has received. How was it preserved, renovated and developed? Who is involved?

At what cost? What are the positive and negative impacts of this development? What are its implications?

D. Evaluate and critique how the development of this cultural destination serves the destination’s strategic goals (national or local). Is

it part of a bigger strategy? Is it sustainable? Does it serve the interests of its residents, tourists, etc.

E. Formulate recommendations for future development. Give any suggestions and recommendations, which will help the destination to sustain

its competitiveness and improve its performance.

CONCLUSION
In this brief part, you bring your work to a close and state. In conclusion, you should wrap up your paper, briefly summarize what you

have discussed in the “main body” and draw out the essences and findings from it. You can also make suggestions for future research (250

words).
