CVC insertion procedure Process Diagram

Using vizio, word or powerpoint (wherever you can use process map tools) create a process diagram to show the steps in the CVC insertion process. a summary is provided below but please show areas for break points in the process map, and where decisions might need to be made in the process (use appropriate symbols)

Summarized Procedure
• Need for treatment is determined.
• Patient is informed and consent is obtained.
• Procedure is carried out wherever deemed necessary by the medical team providing care.
• Region for insertion is determined.
• Area surrounding the point for insertion and the pathway leading to the targeted vein anesthetized using Lidocaine (1%) hydrochloride.
o Care is taken to ensure that anesthetic is not directly injected into the bloodstream. i.e. pull back, check, inject, continue.
• When blood is pulled into the syringe, vein has been found. Sonagraphic detection is currently employed to facilitate the process of finding the vein for insertion of the catheter.
• Guide wire is inserted
• Insertion point is dilated to receive the tubing.
• Line is guided into the vein by feeding the guide wire through its opening.
• Guide wire is pulled out.
• Tubes of the CVC are flushed.
• Line is secured to the body via stitching/bandaging.
• Chest x-ray is obtained to ensure that the line was properly inserted.
