The passage is from Descartes’ Meditations, section II. You’ll find the full reading on-line on the course website.

”This proposition: I am, I exist is necessarily true each time it is conceived by me”

explain the meaning of this passage, its significance for Descartes’ philosophy, and even its signif-icance for human thought more generally. What question does it

answer, for instance?
What problem(s) does it leave us with as philosophers? This paper, just like the first,
should be intelligent and reflective, and so not the first thing that comes to mind. Tell
me as clearly and as plainly as you can what you come to think after you’ve examined,
and re-examined, and examined again the first thing that came to your mind.
Your primary aim is to show you understand the importance of this passage and can
explain this to someone. If you can’t explain it clearly then you do not understand it,
and vice versa.
