As a clinical nutritionist working in the Diabetes unit of a large teaching hospital, you have been asked to write an article on Diabetes & Diet for the hospital bulletin.

The Bulletin is aimed predominantly at junior medical staff, however is regularly read by nurses and other Allied Health Professionals (AHPs).

the article should cover 3 main areas:

1. An overview of Diabetes, emphasising the importance of good glycaemic control in preventing or delaying the development and progression of diabetic complications.
2. The current dietary guidelines for individuals with diabetes, with justification as to why these recommendations have been made.
3. Practical advice on how health professionals can assist individuals with diabetes in the West of Scotland to achieve these guidelines and maintain / achieve optimum health.
You should include within this 3rd section:
a. The key areas of focus when providing dietary advice to individuals with Type 1 and Type II diabetes respectively.
b. How health professionals can successfully incorporate behaviour change strategies into their consultations.
c. A sample days eating plan conducive to the current dietary guidelines.
