Document Based Essay

When analyzing primary sources, it is important to understand the content of the source (what it says), but also its context (the world in which it was produced and received). To develop a solid analysis of a primary source, attention must be paid to answering basic questions about source’s author, their time period, and their audience. Critical analysis questions such as: does this source or author demonstrate an inherent bias, and if so why; does the type of source (ie, diary entry or campaign speech) or its intended audience influence the text; does the person’s gender, race, religion, location, class, etc., inform its conclusions, and on and on.
