Does slacktivism work?

Does slacktivism work? In other words, do online clicks have a real effect and lead to more commitments (actual material support/action) or detract from real causes and pro-social activism? (Examples of material/pro-social activism are: voting, providing financial support/donation, protesting, writing to their congress(wo)men, etc.)
