Clinical Scenario 2
You are assigned to follow a 35 year-old obese woman with newly diagnosed diabetes during your advanced internal medicine clerkship. This patient is currently taking metformin. Because you are unfamiliar with this drug, you would like to obtain the following information about it: what therapeutic class it belongs to, how it works, the recommended starting dose, and associated adverse effects. Your preceptor then asks you to find evidence that supports the use of metformin in obese patients with newly diagnosed diabetes.
