Dvořák and “Modernism”

 

Each response should be about one (1) double- spaced page (no more than three (3) pages total, please) and should include a
brief, relevant quote (with citation) from the reading (textbook or Strunk) as well as reference to two (2) examples of music
from the assigned listening. A more thorough response will receive more credit.

1. Dvořák’s essay “Music in America” from 1895 presents the author’s views on the state and future of music in America in the
late 19th c. Discuss his position on where American music should find its source (and why), and the positions of a few of
those who did (or didn’t) agree with him (as discussed in ch. 11). You might conclude by discussing whether or not Dvořák’s
goals for America have been realized (schools, orchestras, opera houses, etc.)

2. “Modernism” is used to identify composers working in diverse styles, genres, and places at the end of the 19th c. Discuss
the work and contributions of one of the following composers, highlighting (1) components of the individual’s style, (2)
relationships to contemporary trends (e.g. Modernism, Symbolism, Verismo, etc.), and (3) examples of major works. Mahler,
Strauss, Puccini, Debussy
