Empirical Research Paper

For the empirical research paper, students will submit a complete paper that includes:

I. Introduction and Hypothesis

A. Topic and why important (I have the introduction and why I believe the topic is important)

B. Thesis

II. Literature Review – based on the sources from your annotated bibliography, plus any additional sources. (I’ll provide the sources 5 sources I used) and you can add 2 more sources for the literature review.

III. Research Design

IV. Analysis

V. Conclusion

VI. Reference Page

Research Design Outline
A. Hypothesis
“People of color are more likely to support increased spending on public education”
B. Dependent Variable
1. Federal Budget Spending: public schools (fedspend_schools)
a) It is measured as anordinal variable because it measures the amount of support depending on the ethnic group
b) It is coded1-3; 1-increased; 2- decreased; 3- kept about the same/ kept the same; 1=2, 2=0,3=1
C. Independent Variable
1. R race and ethnicity group (dem_raceeth)
a) It is measured as a nominal variable because the variable consists of different categories.
b) It is coded 1-4; 1-White, 2-Black non- Hispanic, 3-Hispanic, 4- Other non- Hispanic;White=0, POC (People Of Color)=1
D. Control Variable
1. Family income (incgroup_prepost)
a. It is measured as a numerical variable
b. It is coded 1-28; 1- (Under $5,000) 2- ($5,000-$9, 999), 3- ($10,000-$1 2,499), 4- ($12,500-$1 4,999), 5- ($15,000-$1 7,499), 6- ($17,500-$1 9,999), 7- ($20,000-$2 2,499), 8- ($22,500-$2 4,999), 9- ($25,000-$2 7,499), 10- ($27,500-$2 9,999),
11- ($30,000-$3 4,999), 12- ($35,000-$3 9,999), 13- ($40,000-$4 4,999), 14- ($45,000-$4 9,999), 15- ($50,000-$5 4,999), 16- ($55,000-$5 9,999), 17- ($60,000-$6 4,999), 18- ($65,000-$6 9,999), 19- ($70,000-$7 4,999), 20- ($75,000-$7 9,999), 21- ($80,000-$8 9,999), 22- ($90,000-$9 9,999), 23- ($100,000-$ 109,999), 24- ($110,000-$ 124,999), 25- ($125,000-$ 149,999), 26- ($150,000-$ 174,999), 27- ($175,000-$ 249,999), 28- ($250,000 or more)
c. I expect that the “Family income” to have negative effect. The higher the income, the less likely the support is toward increased spending on public education.
2. PRE: Total number of children in HH (dem2_numchild)
a) It is coded 0-3; 0- No children in the household, 1-one child in the household, 2- two children in the household, 3- three or more children in the household; 0=0, 1-3=1
b) I expect that the “Total number of children in HH” to have positive effect. The more children there are in the household, the more likely the support is toward increased spending on public education.
E. Type of Regression
A linear regression will be run.
