English 101

For class, I would like for you to write an essay about one of the prompts below. It must be at least 250-500 words in length.

1. Fantasy plays a significant role in M. Butterfly not just for Renee Gallimard but also for a few other characters as well. Choose another character to explore how fantasy dictates their actions.

2. M. Butterfly is about actors within the play’s narrative, that is to say not just in the sense that we are observing the events of a stage production but also that the story itself involves people “playing their parts.” Some do this literally, pretending to be someone they are not, but others have done so in order to lie to themselves. Using one of the characters, explore how they are playing a character in order to lie to themselves or others.

3. In M. Butterfly, can we trust Song Liling even as audience members? At times, she/he appears to be telling us the truth at least about his/her own opinions. Does this ever happen? Are we victims of Song’s deception, too, or are there moments in which he/she is being sincere?
