The following text comes from Edna O’Brien’s novel, Girl with Green Eyes. Page 30. (published by Penguin in 1962).
(i) At the end of the pier we looked down at the water as it lapped against the concrete wall and he told me that he had won cups and medals for swimming when he was a boy. (ii) He had lived most of his life in Dublin, with his mother, and had gone to work at twelve or thirteen. (iii) His father had left them when he was a small boy, and as a child he had combed the beaches looking for scrap.
