Choose passages from Wordsworth’s “Tintern Abbey” and Shelley’s “Mont Blanc” and Shelley’s “To a Skylark” that you think are central to an understanding of the “Sublime”. Select the passages that demonstrate their experience with “Sublime”. Using quotes from those 3 writings, write an *argumentative* paper that: 1. Explains what the Sublime is; and 2. compares and contrasts the sublime in Wordsworth and Shelley’s poetry.
Questions to Consider: How is the Sublime similar or dissimilar in the two poets’ poetry? What type of situations trigger the Sublime for the two poets? How does each poet react to the Sublime? In what context does each poet use the word “sublime?” Would a broad definition of the Sublime explain the experience of both poets, or are their experiences so different that the sublime needs to be defined differently for both poets?
