Essay #2: Enron
For this essay, you will need to watch the film, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. The film is produced by Magnolia Home Entertainment. You can access the film a few ways:
1. It’s available at this link:

2. It’s on reserve in NVC’s library. There are two copies. Ask for it at the circulation desk, and you may watch it in the library (you can’t take it out of the library). Bring your own earbuds.
3. Access it through Netflix or Amazon. Using this route may require purchase.
After watching the film, write an essay in which you answer the following questions:
• Based on the film, which criminological theory best explains the criminal behavior at Enron? Answer this question based on the film producer’s explanation of what happened at Enron and why they did it. Choose only one theory. Choose from rational choice, strain, differential association, or social control.
• Do you think the producer’s explanation for why they engaged in the criminal behavior is sufficient? If so, explain fully. If not, explain and offer an alternative explanation.
Your grade will be based on the following:
• How well you summarize the explanation for the criminal behavior as presented in the film (why they did it)
• How well you present your choice of criminological theory and connect it to the film producer’s explanation for why they did it.
• How well you critique the film producer’s explanation from a criminological perspective
The two sources you may use are the film and your textbook. No additional sources may be used. Cite sources using APA format.
