Assignment 2 – factors that affect the specification of materials and
building services and how environmental factors affect the planning
and design phases of the construction process
Purpose of this assignment
By carrying out this assignment the students will understand the factors that affect the selection and
specification of material and building services system to the building project
Learners will understand how the planning and design stages that will impact of the environment within
construction industry.
In addition to the above PASS criteria, this assignment gives you the opportunity to submit evidence in order to achieve the following MERIT
and DISTINCTION grades
Grade Descriptor Indicative characteristic/s Contextualisation
M1
Identify and apply strategies to find
appropriate solutions
An effective approach to study and research
has been applied.
You have fully referenced at least FIVE different factors
answering Task 1 and related these back to the selection of
materials, systems and equipment.
M2
Select/design and apply appropriate
methods/techniques
A range of sources of information has been
used.
Discuss the selection of FIVE services utilising various
sources of information to justify your answer.
D1
Use critical reflection to evaluate own
work and justify valid conclusions
Conclusions have been arrived at through
synthesis of ideas and have been justified.
You have for Task 2 evaluated and justify in detail how
critical the financial implications are when selecting building
services systems, providing various examples to consolidate
your answer.
D2
Take responsibility for managing and
organising activities
Autonomy/independence has been
demonstrated.
You have provided a detailed report summarising EU
Strategy on the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources in
Task 3, providing informed suggestions for the solution.
D3
Demonstrate convergent/lateral/creative
thinking
Effective thinking has taken place in unfamiliar
contexts.
In Task 4, you have critically analysed how a successful
Waste Management System could affect the employee,
employer, stakeholder, public and company. Providing
various solutions to rectify the problem.
Please note that for unit assignments assessors should use these or other exemplar indicative characteristics for the individual grade
descriptors from Annexe C of the HN specification or any other relevant indicative characteristics for the particular assignment. The
indicative characteristic should then be contextualised. Only one indicative characteristic per grade descriptor, M1, M2, M3, D1, D2, D3 is
required.
