Learning outcomes:
• Discuss the structure and role of NZ and international environmental agencies
(The underlying reasoning, ethical, economic, and social benefits of implementing environmental improvement techniques and management systems, including ISO14001.)
• Assess benefits and limitations of current environmental management systems and techniques
(The environmental management tools, systems and techniques available for the enhancement of sustainability including carbon trading, life cycle analysis, environmental impact assessment, carbon footprinting and environmental auditing).
• Propose appropriate technologies for sustainable energy use and waste management.
(Technologies available for the mitigation, minimisation, and remediation of degraded environmental media (historical, current and future – including renewable energy generation, energy efficiency initiatives, waste management and water/wastewater treatment and use).
Requirements:
Following the visit to Fonterra Tirau prepare a report including the following:
• Introduction: Summary of the inputs and operations within the Tirau site.
• Impact Assessment: Detail features you believe should have been included in an EIA submitted to Environment Waikato at the time of resource consent application.
• Environmental Management tools: Summarise Fonterra’s philosophy towards environmental management and discuss their use of environmental management tools.
• Waste Minimisation: Detail volumes of waste product resulting from Casein manufacture and describe processes used by Fonterra to reduce waste products.
• Waste Treatment: Describe waste treatment operations on the Fonterra Tirau site. Include details of resource consent targets and the performance of the waste treatment technologies.
• Energy Efficiency Initiatives: Detail energy efficiency initiatives implemented at Fonterra Tirau.
• Your report should be approximately 2-3,000 words.
• Additional information may be sourced from the internet.
• References are to be in APA format and listed at the end of the report.
• The report will be submitted through “Turnitin” to check authenticity.
